Ratchet driver: 6 tools in 1

By Larry Eisinger
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICE

Of the thousands of tools on the market, homeowners probably have more screwdrivers than anything else. Different size screws require different size Workshop bits, and when you add up the kinds of bits—Phillips, Torx, Robertson, and others—the number of drivers a household or shop needs is beyond estimate.

There are countless manufacturers around the country and thc industry's total output of tools is staggering. One manufacturer I know of produces more than a million screwdrivers a day. The demand for screwdrivers is so great that new designs are constantly being introduced.

The tool illustrated, which was first introduced at the National Hardware Show and Building Exposition last month, is unique in that it has six interchangeable bits—three single bits with different size and shape tips on each end and a built-in ratchet in the body, which you can set for clockwise or counterclockwise rotation and also for straight driving.

Some of these features can be found in competitive products, but the one I found most noteworthy was the handle, which swivels to form a T. It makes the tool easier to grasp than a straight screwdriver and the extending arms make it possible to increase leverage.

The bits fit into the driving ends and are held by a spring-loaded ball bearing that presses against the side wall.

The tool is made by SaberTooth Tools of Draper, Utah, and sold in many hardware stores. A stubby version just 31/2 inches long without the ratchet mechanism is available; it has a pocket clip so you can carry it like a pen.

Not every terrific tool at the hardware show came with a motor, carbide blade or a laser beam. A case in point is the Crescent folding 6-in-1 screwdriver. To use it, you just pivot out the T handle to deliver plenty of leverage. The tool is chrome-nickel-plated and its three double-ended bits are made of tool steel.
